Opera Hong Kong will stage a double bill this autumn: two verismo classics—Cavalleria Rusticana by Pietro Mascagni and Pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallo, performed from Oct. 8–11 at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Grand Theatre.
The two operas, both rooted in Sicily, are presented as twin tales of love turning to hatred. The production is framed around a single creative idea: Italian emotional intensity carried through history, language, music and aesthetics.
At the core of the casting is Konstantine Kipiani, who takes on two different male tragedies in one night—portraying Turiddu, a young man torn between two women in Cavalleria Rusticana, and Canio, a broken husband whose despair erupts into fatal violence in Pagliacci.
The female leads sharpen the emotional contrasts. Gosha Kowalinska plays Santuzza, depicting jealousy and humiliation as emotions that "concentrate and erupt" like a volcanic release. Wang Bingbing, as Nedda in Pagliacci, presents a character outwardly bound to Canio’s world yet inwardly longing for innocence, reflecting her own real-life experience of marriage across age.
The pairing also highlights fatal love through different sources: Pagliacci draws on a late-19th-century Italian murder case, while Cavalleria Rusticana unfolds on Easter morning in a Sicilian village, ending with Turiddu’s last farewell before the duel.
