FIFA released its latest men's world rankings on Oct. 7, with China dropping five places to 96th — its lowest ranking in nearly a decade.
China was also ranked 96th in the March 2016 rankings. Over the following decade, China's highest ranking was 57th in Oct. 2017. At the recently concluded 2026 CFA Team China, Chongqing International Football Invitational, China recorded one win and three losses: a 3-0 win over the Maldives, a 0-3 defeat to New Zealand, a 0-5 loss to Palestine, and a 0-1 defeat to Tajikistan. In the latest rankings, China's total points dropped to 1,241.90, placing them 15th among AFC member associations.
In contrast to China, Hong Kong, China stopped their slide and moved up this period: thanks to the 3.99 points gained from their match against Cambodia, Hong Kong climbed three places to 153rd in the world with 1,035.23 points, ranking 30th in Asia — still 57 places below China, with a points gap of about 207. Within Asia, Hong Kong's neighbours in the rankings are Singapore (149th) and Myanmar (159th). Macau, China is ranked around 193rd.
At the top of the overall standings, Spain, Argentina, France, and England remain in the top four, while Portugal moved up two places to fifth. Sixth to tenth are Brazil, Morocco, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Mexico.
