According to the US outlet Axios, citing several US officials, the US Department of Defense had just days earlier instructed US Central Command to complete relevant preparations in response to a possible resumption of a large-scale military campaign against Iran. The directive did not specify any target dates, and US President Donald Trump has not yet made a final decision.
The report said US and Israeli sources believe the action could take place before the US midterm elections or it could begin ahead of the Israeli election scheduled for the prior week. If a large-scale military operation is resumed, it is expected to include large-scale airstrikes targeting Iran's energy infrastructure, other infrastructure, and nuclear-related sites.
The report also said that Trump's national security team held a meeting at Camp David for several hours last week, during which they discussed the possibility of resuming large-scale military operations against Iran. US-Iran negotiations have not yet made progress, and Qatar is still waiting for Iran to respond to the latest proposals from the US.
