The Naha City Assembly in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, unanimously passed a protest resolution and written opinion on Oct. 6 over the suspected killing of a U.S. service member stationed in Okinawa, demanding effective measures to prevent similar incidents from happening again. Naha City Assembly member Akira Aguni said the heinous incident, which took the precious life of a resident, not only brought immeasurable grief and regret to the victim's family but also pushed local residents' anger to its peak.
The protest resolution and written opinion demand that the Japanese and U.S. governments bear responsibility, sincerely apologize to the victim's family, provide adequate compensation, strictly tighten discipline, and take effective measures to fundamentally prevent similar incidents from recurring.
Okinawa Prefectural Police arrested a U.S. soldier stationed in Okinawa, Devin Ballard, on Oct. 4. He is assigned to the U.S. Marine Corps at the U.S. military's Futenma base and is suspected of robbing and killing a local woman at a hotel in Naha in the early hours of Oct. 3.
