A 22-year-old man from Hong Kong, who left school after Form Five and works in the catering industry, recently triggered intense online debate by saying he plans to move to the UK or Australia despite having no BNO status, limited education, no savings, and little family support.

He explains that he has wanted to leave Hong Kong since he was 15, has studied a vocational catering diploma, earns around HK$20,000 a month, and can handle most household responsibilities. He acknowledges that overseas life will likely involve low-level work and that immigration rules are tightening, but says he feels uncertain about his future and wants to "take action."

After his post went viral, some commenters argued that life abroad is less ideal than people assume, finding jobs can be difficult, commuting may be inconvenient, and taxes can be burdensome. Others warned that without savings or strong family backing, survival could be extremely challenging.

Many suggested a more realistic path, such as starting with a working holiday to test the reality first, because newcomers without in-demand professional skills may struggle to improve beyond basic jobs, especially in a weak global job market.

People should reflect on whether they are truly seeking a different life or merely trying to escape the problems at home.
