Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan has welcomed the 11 Skies project handover and expressed hope that the Airport Authority can transform the mega complex into a high-end tourism destination.
Her comments came after the Airport Authority reached an agreement with New World Development to terminate the sublease of the 11 Skies development project on April 1 next year.
Speaking on a Commercial Radio programme on Saturday (Oct. 3), Chan said the authority should quickly set out a clear direction and timetable to reposition and redevelop the relevant projects.
She also stressed a need to upgrade the projects to high‑end, experiential tourism offerings that meet the needs of transit passengers and align with the airport city's overall development plan.
"We hope the Airport Authority will set up a dedicated subsidiary with a dedicated team that can respond to market needs and capacity – especially for transit passengers," Chan said.
"This would allow property projects that are currently purely office space or retail and dining to be upgraded and transformed into high-end tourism offerings with experiential activities, enabling a more integrated approach to support the airport city's broader plan."
Chan noted that the redevelopment also needs to align with the opening of Terminal 2 at the airport by the end of 2027 and the completion of phase two of the AsiaWorld‑Expo in 2028, and accommodate driverless vehicles.
Regarding the southbound yacht scheme expected to launch this month, Chan said the government has been preparing berthing and onshore facilities.
The Marine Department has, she pointed out, established a real-time yacht movement monitoring system and designated five anchorage zones within Hong Kong waters.
It and the Guangdong Maritime Safety Administration are, Chan added, working closely to enhance facilitation measures for yachts travelling north from Hong Kong and south from Guangdong.
