A mayor in Mexico's Puebla state is facing a backlash after a video circulated online showing him hoisting a woman onto his shoulder and repeatedly slapping her buttocks during Independence Day celebrations.
The incident took place on Sept 15 in Nativitas, where José "Pepe" Cinto Bernal, the town's mayor, was filmed dancing to live regional music while carrying the woman. The footage quickly spread across social media, drawing criticism from viewers who said the behavior was inappropriate for a public official and reflected sexist attitudes.
As of Sept 23, Bernal had not issued a public response. His recent social media posts focused on municipal affairs and local youth competitions, without mentioning the controversy.
Mario Riestra Piña, chairman of Puebla's National Action Party (PAN), shared and condemned the video, adding political pressure as public criticism mounted.
Bernal has previously been involved in a series of controversies. In August 2026, another clip reportedly showed him partying while sitting astride someone's shoulders. In 2025, he was filmed appearing to pass out inside a vehicle. In October 2023, during his second annual government report, protesters shouted insults such as "get out" and "liar," and objects were thrown at the scene.
Bernal was first elected mayor in 2021 and won re-election in 2024. His current term is expected to run through 2027.
