A survey report released Monday by a U.S. think tank shows that 57% of Americans surveyed believe the United States should pursue friendly cooperation and engagement with China, indicating that the trend of U.S. public support for engagement and exchanges with China continues to grow, with more and more Americans supporting stronger cooperation with China.
The poll was conducted by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs from July 10 to 21, interviewing 2,156 adults across all 50 U.S. states and Washington, D.C. The report shows that over the past decade, the American public's views of China have gradually become more favorable. "As concerns about China gradually recede, Americans are leaning toward strengthening engagement with China," the report said. It noted that views of China have improved across U.S. party lines. Last year's survey by the council showed that Democrats clearly favored engagement with China, while Republicans in the latest survey were also found to be shifting in the same direction. The share of Republicans supporting friendly cooperation and engagement with China has risen by 10 percentage points, reaching its highest level since 2019.
U.S. economic and social development is highly dependent on commerce, and the U.S. business community also benefits from stable U.S.-China relations. Guo Wei, vice president of U.S.-based health and hygiene company Kimberly-Clark and managing director of Greater China, said that a stable, open and predictable trade and economic environment will create more long-term development opportunities for enterprises, because multinational companies often plan investments over five-year, 10-year or even longer cycles. Berrone, a board member of the Iowa Sister States, said, The U.S.-China relationship is the most important bilateral relationship in the world today. We must find a way to be partners, not rivals. Cooperation can benefit both sides and, more importantly, deliver long-term benefits, creating a more stable and prosperous future for future generations.
