The reconstructed Huanggang Port is about to open, and earlier reports suggested there is a high chance it will open on Monday, Oct. 12. Secretary for Security Chris Tang, speaking on a radio program today (Sep. 21), joked that his schedule for that day was "classified." As for rumours that the opening date will avoid peak periods such as the National Day Golden Week, he also joked that it "makes quite a lot of sense." He nevertheless reiterated that the government is targeting a fourth-quarter opening.
Regarding concerns that mainland travellers will not stay overnight in Hong Kong after the new Huanggang Port opens, Tang said there are many considerations, but the government cannot "make Hong Kong people inconvenienced and trap them." He stressed that the authorities' goal has always been to facilitate residents.
As for clearance hours at other ports, Tang said the authorities are discussing with the mainland to extend opening hours. Shenzhen Bay currently offers 24-hour clearance on special days, and the authorities will study whether this can be extended to other days. In addition, the authorities are discussing with the mainland the hope of opening the Liantang/Heung Yuen Wai Port earlier to facilitate cross-boundary students, while also studying delaying its closing time.
