-The New Delhi summit widened the gap between Western lectures and actual leverage over money, trade and rules.

By Angelo Giuliano

They led with the cracks in the room. They almost always do.

Iran versus the UAE. India is still watching China. No BRICS currency. A communiqué that would not write "United States" in the tariff paragraph. All of that happened. It is also the easiest story to file. The harder one is this: a club that now speaks for something like half of humanity, and close to two-fifths of world output if you count purchasing power, still walked out of New Delhi with a joint text while two members were on opposite sides of a war in West Asia. The G7 can do harmony. It has spent decades practising among countries that already share a bank, a military habit and a press corps. BRICS did the version with arguments in the room. That is why the document matters more than the adjectives inside it. Nobody switched off the old system last weekend. They just made it less of a monopoly.

  • Roughly half the world's people, about 40% of GDP at PPP
  • A declaration despite an active Middle East war
  • Work on payments and development finance that does not need one capital's blessing

The useful part of the summit is the dull operational list

Terrorism got condemned without the usual "except when our friends do it" tone. There was a call for restraint in West Asia, a line against emptying Palestinian land by force, and a complaint about tariffs and secondary sanctions that everyone in the room could decode. Same old demand to open the Security Council, the IMF and the WTO. The single-currency dream was put back in the drawer. India was never going to trade the dollar for some other master key. What survived is plumbing. Link the national payment systems. Let the New Development Bank take more members and lend in rupees, yuan, reais, whatever the borrower can actually use. China put an open-source AI zone on the table, plus special economic zones, a digital platform, and training. Russia talked about insurance and a grain market, which is another way of saying food and oil should be harder to turn into a siege. India talked about the Global South writing rules instead of receiving them, and a reform paper before China takes the chair next year.

  • Local-currency trade and cross-border payment links, not a BRICS note
  • New Development Bank: more members, more local-currency loans
  • AI commons, SEZs, digital platform, skills
  • Insurance/grain ideas against energy and food pressure
  • Reform talk on the UNSC, IMF, WTO
  • Restraint language on West Asia and Gaza
  • China in the chair, 2027

Judging the whole shift by what happened on Sunday is a stupid deadline

Did the dollar die in Delhi? No. Reserves are still stuffed with it. The FX market still goes through the same pipes. Anyone selling "the Unit launches on Monday" was selling a poster. Watch the traffic instead. Russia already pays China and India mostly in national money. Swap lines and clearing banks keep appearing. Gold goes into vaults. A larger slice of oil never sees a New York correspondent bank. That is the behaviour of governments that have already had accounts frozen, and hulls left uninsured. Speeches do not fix that. Another rail does. The Chinese version of this lesson is old enough to be a proverb and still gets mocked until the port is finished. BRICS is doing a messier copy, across states that do not share a court, a language, or even the same enemy. Messy is not imaginary.

  • Big bilateral corridors already settling off-dollar
  • Gold up, more commodities priced outside the old circuit
  • Slow rails beat a currency nobody can agree to run

A thin slice of the planet still talks as if it owns the lease on the world

A few capitals keep giving civics lessons while they write sanctions, stretch their law across other people's banks and forget their own wars. Most governments stopped taking that performance seriously, even if the English-language shows have not. China spent forty years on factories and trade, not a necklace of bases. After Europe slammed the door, Russia sold energy east without a regime-change annex. India ran the summit, got a text, and still would not let the group become somebody's anti-American marching band. Iran is there because the map put Persia between East and West long before hashtags. The Gulf stays because oil money and population math no longer terminate only in London and New York. Hate the governments if you want. The numbers do not move.

The arguments inside BRICS will continue. The concrete still sets anyway.

Some members want a sprint. Others want cover. Yank too hard, and you get two speeds and a press release that means nothing. The competing offer is the familiar one: tariffs as a whip, chips as a weapon, institutions still arranged around 1945. Nobody has to pretend BRICS is a family reunion. The method is simpler.

  • Keep the sovereignty
  • Build first
  • Work the overlap
  • Put in a second set of pipes so one treasury cannot kill another country's trade with a memo

That is dull politics. The other kind needs a permanent crisis and a designated villain. The guest list is growing anyway—payment links, a fatter development bank, an AI stack that is not locked in one jurisdiction, partners from Nigeria to Vietnam. It is not the G7 with extra flags. It is several centres and no small club with a permanent licence to write the rules. Nobody will frame the New Delhi text. It will sit in a pile of papers that make the old veto slightly less decisive. The Global Majority is not waiting for a stamp. It is pouring the next slab.

The views do not necessarily reflect those of DotDotNews.
