Kevin Lau, the Founding Convenor of the Hong Kong Global Youth Professional Advocacy Action, spoke about HK's rule of law during an interactive dialogue with the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention at the 63rd session of the UN Human Rights Council on Sept. 15.
Lau said HK courts decide cases based on the law and evidence proved beyond reasonable doubt, and are free from interference.
Referring to the trial of Jimmy Lai, he said the case was heard over 156 sitting days in open court, involving 2,200 exhibits and 80,000 pages of documents. "An opinion is not a verdict," Lau said.
He also noted that the National Security Law in HK stipulates that human rights shall be respected and protected while safeguarding national security in the HKSAR.
