Today (Sept. 8), Chief Executive John Lee attended the launch ceremony for young people from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) taking up positions in the United Nations system. He witnessed the departure of the third batch of young HKSAR civil servants for postings at UN agencies.
In his remarks, Mr Lee first congratulated the recommended young civil servants. He noted that this year marks the first year of the country's 15th Five-Year Plan, and said the HKSAR Government will unveil Hong Kong's first-ever five-year plan next Wednesday. He emphasised that Hong Kong's young people applying their professional strengths on the international stage is a practical contribution to the country's overall diplomacy, and also a duty and mission in advancing the building of a shared future for mankind.
With strong support from the Central People's Government and assistance from the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the HKSAR, the HKSAR Government joined the United Nations Junior Professional Officer (JPO) Programme in 2019 and 2023. The first two batches performed outstandingly in areas including combating transnational crime, climate coordination, international trade, and protecting intellectual property, earning high praise from the United Nations. Nearly half of the participants were requested to extend their terms of office.
This third batch includes 16 individuals, the largest number to date. They come from a range of departments, including the Financial Services and the Treasury Bureau, the Department of Justice, the Hong Kong Police Force, the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC), and the Customs and Excise Department, reflecting Hong Kong's professional strengths across multiple fields. Departures will begin this month, with postings at UN Headquarters and offices in Geneva, Vienna, Nairobi, and other locations.
