Flash floods that struck northern Nepal on Aug. 26 have claimed 675 lives, with 2,498 people still missing as of 6:30 pm local time on Aug. 29, according to Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority.
The Chinese Embassy in Nepal said on Aug. 30 that it has attached great importance to safeguarding the safety of Chinese citizens and has actively coordinated with Nepalese authorities to deploy helicopters for the urgent rescue and evacuation of trapped Chinese personnel. To date, the embassy has successfully facilitated the search, rescue, and transfer of 94 Chinese nationals in coordination with Nepalese authorities.
According to China Central Television (CCTV), the embassy activated its emergency response mechanism immediately after the severe mudslides and floods struck Nepal, and has been fully engaged in emergency response efforts. The embassy quickly contacted enterprises and other personnel in the affected areas to verify their safety, provided guidance on shelter and care arrangements, and dispatched a working group to the disaster zone to coordinate rescue operations.
The embassy has maintained hotline communication with relevant Nepalese departments at all levels, urging Nepalese authorities to race against time in searching for affected Chinese citizens and to provide timely updates on the progress. Meanwhile, the embassy has conveyed condolences and support to Nepal and expressed its readiness to cooperate with Nepalese authorities in search and rescue operations actively.
