A satellite launch vehicle test at the Jiupeng Base in Pingtung County went awry this morning (Aug. 19), veering off its scheduled seaward trajectory and crashing into a mountainous area; residents said they were terrified.
No casualties or property damage were reported. The Pingtung County government demanded an immediate investigation and a full public explanation, and called for a suspension of all missile tests until the cause is determined.
The Chungshan Institute of Science and Technology said the rocket suffered an early‑flight trajectory anomaly, and its self‑destruct mechanism was activated, bringing debris down within the planned safety zone.
