The 2nd World Humanoid Robot Games (WHRG) opened in Beijing last Saturday and will run through Aug. 26, with organizers introducing upgraded on-site support to keep the "mechanical athletes" fully powered, efficiently checked in, and ready to compete.

This year's Games have attracted 666 teams and 2,056 robots from 16 countries and regions across six continents, reflecting the event's fast-growing international reach. Organizers say the number of participating teams has risen 138 percent compared with the inaugural edition, signaling a shift from early-stage tech showcases toward more application-oriented, competition-grade testing.

A headline addition is the newly established "Robot Home," a dedicated support center that functions much like an athletes' village. The facility can accommodate more than 1,500 robots and charge at least 1,200 batteries, while enabling digital check-in and retrieval in as little as 30 seconds per robot, according to China Central Television (CCTV) Finance. The system integrates functions such as storage, dispatch, maintenance, and safety monitoring—approaches that analysts liken to industrial asset management.

Event-side experiences are also being expanded. A themed "Robot Street" will feature activities including intelligent retail, virtual-reality viewing, and robot-operated cafes, aimed at enhancing engagement for both participants and spectators. On the technical side, organizers say the competition environment will be built for higher reliability with 5G + Wi‑Fi converged communications to reduce interference. CCTV Finance also reported that the organizer has developed a dedicated competition command system for robot events and an embodied intelligent robot management platform capable of managing robots across different brands and models.

Competition design is likewise moving closer to real-world utility. While last year's focus centered on whether robots could complete a course, observers note that this year places greater emphasis on task execution in complex environments. Some scenario-based events have already begun preliminaries, featuring long-process tasks built around full "business logic" to test coordination and operational capability in settings that mirror real life.

In one example cited by organizers, humanoid robots took part in a simulated firefighting mission at a real firehouse in Beijing, testing hazard detection, equipment operation, and emergency response. At an industrial ecosystem training and evaluation base inside the National Speed Skating Oval, teams prepared for office-scenario challenges requiring robots to autonomously complete tasks—such as loading printers, arranging meeting supplies, and operating a paper shredder—within 20 minutes, with mistakes or delays affecting scores.

Overall, the Games will run for five days and include 51 events in total: 30 competitive events (including ball games and confrontation contests) and 21 scenario-based events spanning industrial assembly, home services, and emergency rescue. Reports also note that scenario competitions will be staged in environments modeled on factories, hotels, homes, and logistics facilities, with tasks such as assembly, housekeeping, rescue operations, and book sorting.

For the first time, the WHRG will introduce a dedicated dexterous-hand competition, featuring eight high-precision events drawn from industrial production and everyday-life scenarios. Industry participants say the new aims intended to validate fine manipulation capabilities beyond demonstration-level performance.

As the opening approaches, analysts suggest the central question may extend beyond medals: which robots—and which companies behind them—can translate competition results into scalable products and market orders.
