A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck waters near Indonesia's Flores Island at 4:58 am local time (5:58 am Beijing Time) today (Aug 15), with a focal depth of 20 kilometres. Following the quake, tsunamis have been observed in multiple parts of Indonesia. Several aftershocks measuring above magnitude 6 have also struck near the epicenter.
The Maumere search and rescue agency in Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara Province said today that the earthquake has killed 20 people and injured six others. Multiple domestic flights bound for East Nusa Tenggara Province have been cancelled due to the disaster. The Consular Affairs Department of the Indonesian Foreign Ministry stated that, as of now, there are no casualties among foreign nationals.
