Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese made inappropriate remarks about a gift presented by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi during her visit to Australia, in a podcast interview last month, sparking widespread controversy. The Australian opposition on Aug. 11 demanded a public apology over the "offensive" joke, but Albanese rejected the call in parliament, saying he "rejects the premise of the question."
According to Australian media reports, Takaichi presented Albanese with a top-grade Crown Melon from Japan as a diplomatic gift during her visit to Australia in May. In a podcast interview last month, Albanese mentioned the gift, describing it as "strange." When the female host asked whether Takaichi had "smuggled" the fruit through Australian customs, Albanese raised both hands to his chest and gestured, saying: "She brought two, as you do."
In English slang, "melons" is often used as a euphemism for female breasts. Opposition MPs questioned Albanese in parliament on Aug. 11, pointing out that as a national leader, using sexually suggestive language about a female foreign head of state in a public setting was "disrespectful" and an "offensive" joke, and demanded a public apology.
In response, Albanese defended himself, saying: "I reject the premise of the question." He stressed that Takaichi was a friend of Australia and a personal friend, but did not offer further explanation or an apology for his remarks.
Japan has not yet made any public comment on the matter.
