Spider-Man: Brand New Day tops North American box office in opening weekend

Sony and Marvel's superhero film "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" took the top spot at the North American box office during its opening weekend with an estimated US$355 million, according to data released by measurement firm Comscore on Sunday.

The debut ranks as the second-largest domestic opening in Hollywood history, trailing only Disney and Marvel's "Avengers: Endgame," which opened to US$357 million in 2019.

Internationally, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" brought in US$572 million during its opening weekend. Combined with its North American performance, the film's worldwide opening reached US$927 million, making it the second best global debut of all time.

The film has received an approval rating of 90 percent based on 320 reviews to date on review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. It earned an "A" on an "A+" to "F" scale from audiences polled by market research firm CinemaScore.

Universal Pictures' epic action film "The Odyssey" slipped to second place in its third weekend, earning US$51 million. Directed by Christopher Nolan and based on Homer's ancient Greek epic poem, the film has grossed US$395.5 million in North America and US$911.4 million worldwide.

Disney and Pixar's animated film "Toy Story 5" landed in third place with US$6.3 million in its seventh weekend. The film has earned a domestic cume of US$461.7 million and a global total of US$1.066 billion.
