The world-renowned rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar has officially landed at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Grand Theatre for a limited run from July 8 to August 1. Reimagined through the eyes of Judas Iscariot, the show revisits the pivotal biblical events leading up to the Passion and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Driven entirely by music, the production delves deep into the emotional turmoil and complex dynamic between Jesus, Judas, Mary Magdalene, the disciples, followers, and the Roman Empire. Prior to the show's run, the team and main cast sat down with the media to share their unique takes on their characters and the production.
Stripping Away the Divine: A Human-Centric Judas Reimagined
If there is one unifying theme the creative team keeps coming back to, it is humanity. The defining feature of this production lies in its choice to strip away the myth and ground the narrative in raw, human emotion. Lead actors Luke Street (Jesus), Javon King (Judas), and Hannah Richardson (Mary Magdalene) breathe vulnerabilities, doubts, and inner conflict into their roles. By stripping away their divine halos, the characters become instantly relatable and striking.
Among them, Judas undergoes the most striking departure from traditional biblical portrayals—a challenge that Javon King embraces wholeheartedly. King hopes to encourage audiences to look past the centuries-old stereotype and re-examine the tragic figure. "It’s now my job to try to make people like him and try to convince them that he’s not the bad guy in this situation, that he just, is misunderstood,” King reflects. Even after roughly 300 performances, navigating the character remains a dynamic journey. "What I try to do to make people see Judas in a different light is to lead with a whole lot of love and not to make him angry or aggressive or anything like that."
A Musical Legacy: Spontaneity Makes Every Show Unique
Long before it hit the stage, Jesus Christ Superstar originated as a groundbreaking 1970 concept rock album, spawning iconic tracks like "Superstar," "I Don’t Know How to Love Him," and "Gethsemane."According to Musical Director Harry Haden-Brown, the score remains the heartbeat and enduring core of the show. Unlike rigid, pre-set theatre productions, the rotation of cast members, the dynamic energy with the live band, and musical flexibility mean no two nights are ever the same. This live chemistry is precisely what keeps the show fresh and timeless. "It keeps every single night feeling brand new," Haden-Brown says.
Paul Mansfield, Chief Operating Officer of GMG Productions and one of the key figures bringing the show to Hong Kong, brings years of experience in international stage touring. As a long-time Hong Kong resident, Mansfield believes the city's rich, cosmopolitan audience is the perfect match for this fresh take on a timeless classic.
Reflecting on the atmosphere of the production, both Mansfield and Luke Street expressed their delight in the audience's warmth. Street was particularly thrilled by the influx of mainland Chinese theatregoers traveling to Hong Kong for the show: "It’s amazing that people are traveling far to come and watch the show. I hope they come and enjoy it"
