Malaysia's Sepang International Circuit could return to the Formula One calendar this season as hopes of reviving the Bahrain Grand Prix fade due to escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Sources familiar with the matter said on July 23 at the Hungarian Grand Prix that officials are exploring several alternative options, with Malaysia's Sepang circuit among those under consideration. If approved, the race could be scheduled between the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku on Sept. 26 and the Singapore Grand Prix on Oct. 11.
Malaysia's youth and sports minister Taufiq Johari confirmed on July 24 that the country is being considered as a replacement host. He said relevant ministries are holding detailed discussions and assessments with the Prime Minister, and an announcement will be made once a final decision is reached.
Malaysia last hosted a Formula One race in 2017. The country has since continued to host a round of the MotoGP World Championship, and the Sepang circuit remains compliant with International Automobile Federation (FIA) standards. Reports in 2024 said Malaysia's state oil company Petronas, now a partner of the Mercedes Formula One team, was seeking to bring the Grand Prix back in 2026.
Besides Sepang, Japan's Suzuka Circuit has also been mentioned as a possible option, although teams have shown limited interest in returning to Suzuka again this season. Circuits in Portugal and Spain are also considered potential alternatives, particularly if the Qatar and Abu Dhabi races are affected.
The Bahrain Grand Prix at Sakhir and the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in Jeddah, originally scheduled for April, were both cancelled due to conflicts linked to Iran. Qatar and Abu Dhabi are still scheduled to host the final two races of the season from late November to early December, although uncertainty remains over their status.
Due to logistical requirements, a decision on a replacement for the Bahrain race must be made before the August summer break. Formula One had originally planned to hold 24 races this season, and if a replacement event is added, the total number of rounds could be restored to 22 or 23.
