The 2026 World Cup came to a close in the early hours of today (July 20) Hong Kong time, with Spain defeating Argentina 1-0 in the final.
However, Argentina's post-match behaviour has sparked widespread controversy. As the final whistle blew, chaos erupted on the pitch. Argentine player Leandro Paredes was shown a straight red card after grabbing Eric Garcia by the throat and throwing Gavi to the ground.
During the trophy presentation, when Spain lifted the trophy and Rodri received the Golden Ball award, the entire Argentina team turned their backs. Some fans suggested the team was simply facing their own supporters in the stands to acknowledge them in consolation.
According to Xinhua News Agency, after the presentation ceremony, the Argentina team refused all mixed-zone interviews and left the pitch immediately. With hundreds of journalists waiting for hours, several players headed straight for the team bus, causing a commotion.
This is not the first time Argentina have refused media obligations. After winning the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, they also skipped the mixed zone — carrying the trophy through the area and celebrating before leaving.
According to the 2026 FIFA World Cup regulations, all participating teams (including coaches and players) are required to pass through the mixed zone after matches. If a team collectively boycotts the mixed zone or fails to fulfil media obligations, FIFA's disciplinary committee may impose sanctions on the national football association.
Despite the loss, Argentine President Javier Milei announced that the country would still have a national day of mourning or celebration.
