Universal Pictures' epic action film "The Odyssey" dominated the North American box office in its opening weekend with 124.5 million U.S. dollars, data from measurement firm Comscore showed on Sunday (July 19).
The film also took in 139.6 million dollars internationally this weekend, pushing its estimated global debut total to 264.1 million dollars.
Directed by Christopher Nolan and based on Homer's ancient Greek epic poem, the film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, and chronicles his long and perilous journey home following the Trojan War.
"The Odyssey" has become the highest-rated film of Nolan's career while also securing the third-largest opening of the year in North America, behind only "Toy Story 5" and "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie."
The film received widespread acclaim from both critics and audiences, earning a 95 percent approval rating based on 372 reviews on the review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, along with an "A" grade from audiences surveyed by market research firm CinemaScore on its "A+" to "F" scale.
Disney's musical adventure film "Moana" dropped to second place in its second weekend with 19 million dollars. The live-action film has grossed 82.1 million dollars in North America and 178.5 million dollars worldwide.
Rounding out the top three, Universal Pictures and Illumination's animated comedy film "Minions & Monsters" generated 14.8 million dollars in its third weekend, bringing its North American total to 137.6 million dollars.
