At a New York auction on Friday (July 17), a black leather jacket worn by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang brought in US$960,000, 16 times more than its expected US$60,000, according to Sotheby's.
According to a news release from the auctioneer, 45 collectors placed bids on the Tom Ford jacket, which Sotheby's Head of Modern Collectibles Brahm Wachter described as "an object so closely tied to one of the defining figures of the AI era."
Similar to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg's never-ending collection of grey T-shirts or Apple founder Steve Jobs' love of black turtlenecks, Huang has made leather jackets a staple of his look, donning them for almost every public occasion, including the 2021 cover of Time Magazine.
As the leader of Nvidia, he has witnessed the chipmaker develop into one of the world's most valuable publicly traded corporations.
The Edge Institute, a nonprofit organization devoted to teaching English and business education, receives the proceeds from the auction.
