The humor in comedy often springs from adversity. The ability to transform life's dilemmas into laughter on stage is precisely the charm of a stand-up comedian. For comedian Fan Bufan, the stage is not only an outlet for humor but also a journey of communication and breaking down prejudice. As a contestant on "The King of Stand-up Comedy 3," he uses humor to bridge divides and tell his life story through jokes.
Breaking the ice with humor
"The moment he sees you're a disabled person, he's already put up that moral wall." Fan Bufan candidly admits this is the most common challenge he faces as a person with a disability when performing. He has encountered audience members silently shedding tears out of sympathy even before his act officially began. This preconceived pity, to him, creates a communication chasm.
To dismantle this invisible wall, Fan Bufan chooses to turn his physical characteristics directly into comedic material. He said, 'I have to talk about this first, I have to break this down.' He uses his programming background for self-deprecating humor, quipping that despite having only three fingers, he can efficiently 'copy and paste' and even confidently discuss team management.
He deeply understands that breaking the wall in the audience's mind requires immense courage and effort. Even if some audience members still find it difficult to embrace it fully, he has learned to face it with equanimity, using sincerity and humor to dissolve the unease and awkwardness in the room.
An unintentional journey into comedy
Reflecting on his entry into the industry, Fan Bufan humorously describes himself as "a headless fly stumbling in." After resigning in 2023 to engage in charity work, a principal asked him to share with over 300 students. He spontaneously delivered a one-and-a-half-hour talk and felt enjoyment and exhilaration afterwards. Following this, he participated in a speaking competition. He secured second place, at which point a director remarked, "This is quite similar to stand-up comedy."
In 2024, Fan Bufan gained widespread recognition after participating in the "The King of Stand-up Comedy" program, which sparked his interest in pursuing comedy as a career. He entered a national newcomer competition and won an award, becoming well-known in the industry. However, he soon realized that he knew almost nothing about stand-up comedy techniques or the veteran performers. "I didn't recognize any of the comedians they mentioned." Consequently, he began an intense study regimen, watching domestic online shows and international performances. " I need to train my understanding and subtly influence myself."
Dilemmas and persistence
Despite achieving some success in stand-up comedy, Fan Bufan candidly admits to the current challenges he faces. He believes his physical disability is both an advantage and a hindrance. The advantage lies in his inherent ability to create humor: 'difficulties create conflict, which can be funny.' However, this inherent 'difficulty' also puts pressure on the audience, making them uncomfortable, even leading to extreme reactions like 'wiping away tears.'
Faced with these challenges, Fan Bufan displays a rare and valuable optimism. He believes this isn't mere optimism but a different perspective on problems. His principle for doing things is 'happiness.' Even if he earns no income from stand-up for a year, he believes that year won't be wasted, as he will have accumulated writing skills and stage experience—all valuable life experiences.
"I definitely want to go through more rounds." For Fan Bufan, the future stage may bring challenges, but he still looks forward to the opportunity to go further. He is not just telling jokes; he is narrating a story of courage, acceptance, and overcoming obstacles. On that three-foot stage, Fan Bufan, with his "extraordinary" life, embodies the most authentic comedic journey.
