According to Thai media reports, a fire broke out at a bar near Lat Phrao Road in Bangkok's Chatuchak district at around 11:57 pm local time on July 12, killing at least 27 people and injuring 63, with 22 in critical condition. Firefighters took about 30 minutes to bring the blaze under control. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The incident occurred close to midnight. Videos circulating online show the bar engulfed in flames, with thick black smoke and tongues of fire billowing out. People could be seen fleeing the venue in chaos.
At around 1:44 am local time on July 13, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul arrived at the scene. He quoted the bar's musicians as saying that smoke was seen coming from an electrical device near the stage just before the incident. The power then went out across the venue, followed by the sound of an explosion, and the bar quickly filled with thick smoke. Anutin also said that most of the victims were found in the restrooms at the back of the bar. He pledged to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the fire.
