The Argentine Football Association (AFA) says its systems were hacked by Egyptian cyber criminals who sent large numbers of emails accusing the match result in Egypt's favor of being "stolen" through corrupt refereeing.
The defending champions, according to reports, were targeted in a cyber-attack that led accredited Argentine media members to receive threats of further digital attacks unless "justice" was delivered.
Argentinian outlet La Callereports that the emails were sent from AFA addresses and attacked the performance of French referee François Letexier. The messages claimed "Argentina did not win," attributing the outcome to "corrupt refereeing," while praising Egypt's display.
The report adds that hackers of Egyptian origin accessed part of the AFA database, obtaining email addresses, passwords, IP details, and other profile information. After the mass emails reached journalists, Argentina issued an urgent statement saying it rejects any activity from its channels that appears "unusual."
