FIFA announced on July 8 that singers Justin Bieber, Madonna, Shakira, and BTS will jointly headline the World Cup's Super Bowl-style halftime show. The 11-minute performance will also feature Afrobeats singer Burna Boy, Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel, and the PS22 chorus—an elementary school choir from Staten Island, New York—alongside Coldplay. Some characters from Sesame Street will also make cameo appearances.
The halftime show, curated by Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, will take place on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The event aims to support FIFA's Global Citizen Education Fund, which seeks to raise US$100 million to help children worldwide gain access to education and football.
Justin Bieber said, "The FIFA World Cup brings the world together in a way nothing else can." He added, "I’m grateful to be part of this Halftime Show, and even more grateful knowing it’s already helping expand access to education for children around the world."
Burna Boy and Shakira, who performed the official World Cup song "Dai Dai" together, will also appear in the show. Burna Boy said, "The World Cup is one of the few moments that truly brings the world together." He added, "It's an honor to represent Africa in the first-ever World Cup final halftime show, and it's a responsibility I take seriously."
The Super Bowl is famous for its halftime shows, but such performances are rare in football. This year's FIFA World Cup final marks the first time a halftime show has ever been staged in the tournament's history.
