In the early hours of today (July 7) Beijing time, at the 2026 World Cup Round of 16 match held at the Dallas Stadium in the United States, Spain edged Portugal with a 1-0 stoppage-time winner to reach the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 2010.
After the final whistle, Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo, 41, broke down in tears on the pitch. Ronaldo had said before the match that this would be his last World Cup, and the defeat marked his final appearance on football's biggest stage.
Ronaldo's World Cup career ends with 27 appearances and 11 goals. At this World Cup, he started all five matches, scoring three goals from 18 shots, with 9 on target and 3 big chances missed.
