A norovirus outbreak has affected 125 people aboard the Ruby Princess cruise ship, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The CDC said the cruise ship, which docked in San Francisco on July 2, experienced the outbreak during a 20-day round-trip voyage that departed from San Francisco on June 12.
A total of 102 passengers and 23 crew members contracted the virus, developing symptoms including vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. The ship was carrying more than 3,000 passengers and approximately 1,100 crew members.
Princess Cruises has implemented enhanced sanitation measures in response to the outbreak and conducted a comprehensive cleaning of the vessel after it arrived at port.
Norovirus is one of the most common causes of acute gastroenteritis. Infected individuals typically experience symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea.
The virus is highly contagious and can spread through direct contact with infected individuals, contact with contaminated surfaces, or consumption of contaminated food or water.
