The 2026 World Cup Round of 32 knockout stage is underway. In the early hours of today (June 30), the "Samurai Blue" Japan faced the five-time champions Brazil. In the end, Brazil came from behind to beat Japan 2-1, securing their place in the Round of 16.
Match winner Martinelli said after the game: "I can't put into words the joy I feel right now. The stands were full of Brazil fans, and my parents were there watching too. I think it'll take me a few days to really process and appreciate this excitement."
Speaking about his role as a substitute: "At Arsenal, I don't often play this position, but I can certainly handle it. The coach had already talked to me about this arrangement. Whether it's on the left flank or closer to midfield, I'm more than happy to help the team wherever I can."
In the first half, Brazil employed a high-pressing strategy, putting pressure on the Japanese players in the attacking third and achieving good results. They launched fierce attacks on Japan's box but failed to find the net. Japan spent much of the half on the back foot, relying on long clearances. Even when they managed to attack, they struggled to break into Brazil's box as their attempts were repeatedly broken up by defenders. Japan could only create threats from set-pieces, but they stayed focused and kept looking for opportunities in the final third.
In the 28th minute, Japan's No. 24, Kaishu Sano, intercepted the ball in midfield and drove forward before firing a shot from outside the box, finding the back of the net. Japan led Brazil 1-0.
At the start of the second half, trailing 1-0, Brazil intensified their defensive pressure and switched to a man-marking system. While limiting Japan's attacks, they launched their own offensive efforts from the left flank following interceptions, creating multiple threats inside the box – but without scoring. Brazil then shifted tactics, opting for high crosses into the box.
In the 55th minute, Brazil floated a cross into the box from outside the area, and Casemiro (No. 5) rose to head the ball in, pulling one back for Brazil. Japan 1-1 Brazil.
After leveling the score, Brazil maintained their momentum, firmly controlling the flow of the game and continuously probing for chances to extend their lead. Japan, forced to drop deeper, absorbed Brazil's pressure and cleared the ball long, with limited opportunities to counter.
In the 95th minute, Brazil capitalized on a defensive lapse from Japan. Martinelli (No. 22) received a pass and slotted the ball home from close range, completing the comeback. Brazil led Japan 2-1. In the end, the "Samba Boys" snatched victory in stoppage time with a dramatic winner, beating Japan 2-1 and securing their place in the last 16.
