Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha has emerged as one of the most remarkable stories of this FIFA World Cup, but his fairytale rise has not been enough to secure his future at club level.
The 40-year-old shot to global fame after producing a sensational performance against Spain, denying the tournament favorites time and again as Cape Verde battled to a stunning 0-0 draw. Facing a relentless Spanish attack, Vozinha made save after save, keeping out 27 shots, including seven on target, and frustrating a team packed with world-class stars.
The performance turned the veteran goalkeeper into an overnight sensation. His social media following exploded from fewer than 50,000 to more than 14.6 million in just five days—an increase of more than 200 times.
Yet despite his newfound fame, Vozinha has been unable to secure a contract to continue his professional career.
According to the latest reports on June 21, Portuguese second-tier side Chaves has informed the goalkeeper that his contract will not be renewed. He is now set to become a free agent.
Vozinha's path to professional football was far from conventional. He did not sign his first professional contract until the age of 25, joining a small club on his native Cape Verdean island.
