A major armed robbery took place at Hong Kong International Airport yesterday (June 18), leaving a man injured and approximately 6 kilograms of gold worth around HK$7 million stolen.
The incident occurred shortly after midnight on June 18 at Car Park 3 of the airport. The victim, a 36-year-old man surnamed Wu who had just returned to HK, was preparing to retrieve his vehicle when he was ambushed by several masked assailants armed with knives.
Police cordoned off the scene following the attack and launched a large-scale operation across the city to track down the suspects.
Today (June 19), surveillance footage of the robbery circulated on social media. The video shows several men waiting inside the car park as a man dressed in a white shirt and carrying a backpack—believed to be the victim—approaches a white Tesla and opens its rear passenger door.
Three men then approach him. One suspect, wearing dark clothing and a face mask, brandishes a knife and forces the victim toward the rear of the vehicle. Another suspect, dressed in white, is also seen pointing a knife at the victim. The footage does not capture the stabbing or the theft itself.
Moments later, the man in white is seen running past the front of the vehicle while another suspect appears to be acting as a lookout nearby. A black vehicle then reverses toward the scene with its door open. The suspects jump into the vehicle before it drives away, ending the footage.
According to local media reports, the victim had earlier traveled to Bali at the instruction of his former employer to collect 6 kilograms of gold from an Indonesian man. He returned to HK carrying the gold in a black backpack.
While preparing to leave the airport car park, he was allegedly targeted by three masked men. After noticing something suspicious, the victim attempted to flee and used parked vehicles as cover to evade the attackers.
However, the suspects appeared to have planned the robbery in advance and pursued him through the car park before intercepting him.
The victim suffered slash wounds to his left forearm and left thigh, while the backpack containing the gold was forcibly taken. After seizing the gold, the suspects fled in a getaway vehicle heading toward Tung Chung.
Paramedics responding to the scene found the victim conscious despite his injuries. He was initially taken to North Lantau Hospital for treatment before being transferred to Princess Margaret Hospital for further medical care. His condition is reported to be stable.
Investigators found bloodstains at the scene, and a white electric private vehicle is believed to be connected to the case. Police officers were also seen conducting vehicle checks along North Lantau Highway as part of the investigation.
The case has been classified as robbery. No arrests have been made so far, and police are searching for three male suspects believed to be between 20 and 30 years old.
Based on gold bar prices quoted by the HK market and major banks, physical gold is currently valued at approximately HK$1,080 to HK$1,160 per gram. The 6 kilograms of gold involved in the robbery are estimated to be worth between HK$6.48 million and HK$6.96 million.
