Hong Kong's Dragon Boat Festival holiday officially begins on June 19, with two of the city's largest dragon boat events—the Stanley International Dragon Boat Championships and the Aberdeen Dragon Boat Races—taking center stage.
Stanley dragon boat championships combine high-speed racing with food and music
The annual Stanley International Dragon Boat Championships are being held at Stanley Main Beach from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
This year's event has attracted around 180 teams and thousands of athletes. The racecourse, measuring just 270 meters in length, is shorter than many traditional dragon boat tracks, creating faster-paced and more intense competition while allowing spectators to experience the action up close.
In addition to the races, organizers have set up a food market and will host the inaugural "Dragonbeat" DJ party. Olympic gold medalist Eileen Gu has been invited to serve as the event's ambassador.
Gu is the most decorated freestyle skier in Winter Olympic history in terms of gold medals and overall medals won. Her involvement is expected to bring a contemporary touch to the traditional dragon boat festival and attract greater interest from younger audiences.
Aberdeen dragon boat races add floating cosplay competition
Another highlight of the day is the Aberdeen dragon boat races, taking place at Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
With a history spanning more than a century, the event is one of HK's oldest dragon boat racing venues and is widely regarded as an important part of the city's cultural heritage.
This year, organizers are introducing a new floating cosplay contest. Influencers have also been invited to produce promotional videos to help attract visitors.
The initiative aims to blend tradition with contemporary trends while showcasing the unique festive atmosphere of HK's waterfront community. The event is expected to appeal to families, photography enthusiasts and visitors seeking distinctive festival experiences.
Both venues are offering a range of activities beyond the races themselves. Visitors can choose between Stanley's combination of competitive dragon boat action and electronic music entertainment, or Aberdeen's mix of long-standing traditions and creative costume displays.
The Transport Department expects heavy traffic in areas surrounding both events and has advised the public to use public transport where possible and check real-time traffic information before travelling to ensure smoother journeys.
