In 1994, a young Dutchman named Charles Drapers, driven by a yearning for the unknown and a thirst for challenges, embarked on a journey to Hong Kong. At the time, he knew nothing of Asia, yet he firmly believed, "I was willing to give up my life in Europe to come to Hong Kong, trusting in the challenges my future employer in Hong Kong would offer." This courage marked the beginning of a new chapter for him in Hong Kong, forging an inseparable bond with the city.

From designer to brand founder: Hong Kong fulfils entrepreneurial dreams

Charles's first employer was a well-known Belgian bag designer based in Tai Kok Tsui, Hong Kong. It was there that he learned how to work with factories across the border and made his first trip to mainland China to see production lines firsthand. When the company later relocated, Charles used the experience he had gained to strike out on his own and found his own bicycle bag brand.

"The Netherlands is a country of 18 million people and 23 million bicycles. Cycling isn't just a mode of transport—it's a way of life," he says. His products, such as double-layered rear bags and handlebar front pouches, were designed to solve everyday problems: carrying kids, shopping, and commuting. Designed in Hong Kong and manufactured in mainland China, these bags are shipped to the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and Germany—serving as a "flowing bridge" between Europe and Asia.

Compared with the Netherlands' complex bureaucracy and high taxes, Hong Kong's entrepreneurial environment left a strong impression on Charles. "In Hong Kong, you make a plan, go to the government, and the next day your company is registered. It's incredibly fast. Even if you're a foreigner who doesn't speak Chinese, there are organizations like the Hong Kong Trade Development Council ready to help." He notes that this atmosphere of efficiency and support is something many European countries can't match.

Roots planted in a foreign land: Family and new beginnings

Beyond his flourishing career, Charles also became deeply integrated into Hong Kong life. His fond memories of Hong Kong taxis and the HK$12 fare in the nineties have become unique footnotes to his understanding of the city's lifestyle. Upon his arrival, challenges with language and food culture didn't deter him; instead, they ignited his determination to pursue immersive learning, allowing him to adapt and fall in love with the city gradually. He observed how Hongkongers value time and plan their leisure activities, forming a unique "hierarchy" that gave him a deeper understanding of their way of life.

More importantly, Hong Kong became a warm haven for him to build a family. In 1998, he married in Hong Kong and welcomed his two sons. He is deeply grateful for everything Hong Kong has given him, especially praising the dedication and commitment of Hong Kong parents to their children's education. "Hong Kong parents are very dedicated to being parents, which is also very inspiring." He believes that Hong Kong's education system provides children with a strong foundation for academic and personal development.

Grateful for Hong Kong: Home and Future Are Here

For Charles Drapers, Hong Kong is far more than a place to do business. It is a city where he has found deep belonging and rich experience. Over three decades, he has witnessed firsthand how Hong Kong, as a unique gateway between China and global markets, offers energy and efficiency to entrepreneurs seeking access to the vast Asian region. He is sincerely thankful for the opportunities, the room to grow, and the years spent in sync with the city's unique rhythm. For him, Hong Kong is not just a springboard for his career—it is a vital window through which he understands and participates in China's development.

From the Netherlands to Hong Kong, from a young man who knew nothing about Asia to an entrepreneur who has lived here for 30 years, Charles Drapers has closely linked his life to this city. For him, Hong Kong is not only home—it is the starting point from which he connects with China and the world.
