The US government has instructed Anthropic to block access for all non-US citizens to its two most sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI) models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, citing risks to national security.
On Friday (June 12), Anthropic announced that it had received an export control directive from the US government, mandating the suspension of access to both models. The company noted that the order did not specify the exact nature of the national security concerns involved.
This action represents a significant intensification of US oversight over cutting-edge AI systems, as governments increasingly view frontier models not merely as commercial products but as potential national security tools.
Anthropic also stated that it believes the US government has identified a method to circumvent, or "jailbreak," Fable 5. As a result, the order forced the company to immediately disable both Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all users to remain compliant, while access to its other models will remain unchanged.
