Thousands of mysterious pink marine creatures, stretching for hundreds of meters, were discovered on June 6 (Saturday) at Suan Son Beach in Phe Town, Mueang District, Rayong Province, Thailand, drawing significant attention from tourists.
According to Thai media reports, authorities dispatched officials to investigate after receiving notifications, and confirmed that the creatures were a rare marine invertebrate known as the "pink spiky sea cucumber." Officials stated that the phenomenon was likely caused by recent storms and rough waves, which pushed large numbers of sea cucumbers that normally inhabit the seabed toward the shore. This event is a natural occurrence, but the sheer number of sea cucumbers washed ashore is considered rare.
Following an investigation by a team of experts, these "pink spiky sea cucumbers" (scientific name: Cercodemas anceps) are invertebrates with soft, cylindrical bodies resembling cucumbers or sausages. Their surface is covered with small spines, and their color ranges from pink to orange-red. They typically inhabit the seabed, feeding on decomposing marine remains and organic matter, and play an important role in maintaining ecological balance.
Officials reminded that sea cucumbers may secrete irritant substances when startled, which can cause skin allergies upon contact, and visitors should avoid direct contact. Additionally, people should not step on the sea cucumbers, as they may return to the sea with the waves during low tide, and this event will not negatively impact the marine ecosystem.
