The Football Association of Hong Kong, China (HKFA) announced today (June 5) that Roberto Losada, who had been serving as interim head coach, has been officially appointed as the new head coach of the HK men's football team.
The association also revealed plans to host the FIFA ASEAN Cup in HK during the September and October international match windows.
HKFA Chairman Eric Fok said the HK team is currently at an important stage of development and aims to gradually build a young and competitive squad.
He noted that the association has clear objectives regarding the coaching team and hopes the new head coach will provide a defined direction for the team.
These goals include establishing a clear playing style, strengthening tactical organization, improving consistency and discipline during matches, enhancing team cohesion, and helping young players integrate into the squad and reach a higher level of performance.
Speaking at the press conference, Roberto Losada said that in addition to competing in the ASEAN Cup this year, the team will also travel to Japan to participate in the Asian Games, making it necessary to strike the right balance between competitions.
The HKFA also confirmed plans to host the FIFA ASEAN Cup during the September and October FIFA international windows.
Fok said it would be the first time HK hosts a major international football tournament under FIFA's framework and thanked both FIFA and the ASEAN Football Federation for their confidence and support.
According to the association, six teams will participate in the FIFA ASEAN Cup. The teams will be divided into two groups and compete in a single round-robin format. The winners of each group will advance to the final, while the runners-up will contest the third-place playoff.
HKFA General Secretary Charles Cheung said the venue for the tournament has not yet been finalized, but efforts are being made to host the matches at Kai Tak Sports Park.
