Russian President Vladimir Putin will not travel to the US to attend matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Kremlin spokesman Peskov said, according to a report by Xinhua News Agency on June 5.
According to a June 5 report by RIA Novosti, US President Donald Trump had previously said that he might invite Putin to the US to watch matches during the upcoming World Cup. Responding to the suggestion, Peskov stated: "Putin will not go."
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to take place from June 11 to July 19. It will mark the first time in the tournament's history that three countries jointly host the event and the first edition to feature 48 participating teams.
A total of 104 matches will be played across 16 host cities, including 11 in the US, two in Canada and three in Mexico. The tournament is expected to attract millions of fans and visitors from around the world.
Russia previously hosted the 2018 FIFA World Cup, where the Russian men's national team advanced to the quarterfinals.
