The UK's Labour Party is mired in deep internal divisions, with multiple officials stepping down to pressure Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Although Starmer previously indicated he would remain in his post, a fresh report from the Daily Mail quoting a UK Cabinet source claims the Prime Minister has now accepted political reality and is preparing to set out a resignation timetable, hoping to step down in a dignified manner.
The report also cited another cabinet source as saying that it remains unclear exactly when Starmer will announce his decision, but some of his aides have suggested he wait for the preliminary results and canvassing data from the Makerfield by-election in Manchester before making any statement. If the race is tight or Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham is on course to lose, Starmer could still have a chance of holding onto his position. However, other officials argue that Starmer cannot afford the risk of waiting for the by‑election result. If Burnham wins, it would appear as though Starmer had been "driven out" by Burnham, causing him to lose face completely.
