Two HK tourists killed in New Zealand South Island car crash

Two Hong Kong tourists were killed in a serious traffic accident on New Zealand's South Island, according to local police.

New Zealand Police said the crash occurred at around 1:12 p.m. on May 15 local time near the intersection of North Rakaia Road and State Highway 1 in the Selwyn District, involving a collision of at least three vehicles on the mentioned road.

The accident resulted in the deaths of two tourists from HK and injuries to three others. The cause of the incident is currently unknown.

The incident led to the closure of the road for nearly five hours, with traffic diverted and a queue of vehicles stretching for at least one kilometre.

The Chinese Consulate-General in Christchurch has urged local hospitals to make every effort to treat the injured and is providing consular assistance and support to the injured and the families of the victims.

The consulate also reminded travellers that South Island has entered the autumn and winter season, with changeable weather conditions, and urged self-driving tourists to strengthen safety awareness to avoid traffic accidents.
