The Hong Kong Observatory issued a special weather alert today (May 14), warning that showers and squally thunderstorms are expected in the city, with some areas likely to experience heavy rainfall later today and Friday (May 15).
According to the Observatory, the unsettled weather is being brought by a trough of low pressure and upper-air disturbances. The weather authority also forecast that the low-pressure trough will linger over the northern part of the South China Sea during the weekend, bringing further showers and relatively strong winds to HK.
The Observatory said a southerly airstream is currently affecting the coast of Guangdong, bringing showers to the region. Meanwhile, a trough of low pressure over northern South China is generating showers and thunderstorms and is expected to move gradually closer to coastal areas on Thursday.
Locally, the weather today is expected to be mainly cloudy with occasional showers and several squally thunderstorms. Rainfall is expected to become heavier in some areas later in the day, with daytime temperatures reaching around 29 degrees Celsius.
Looking ahead, the Observatory forecast intermittent showers over the next couple of days, with heavier rainfall in some districts. Winds are also expected to strengthen early next week, while several showers will continue.
