Shouli Gao (steamed rice cake with assorted toppings) is a very traditional and iconic street snack from Tianjin, China. Despite the name containing the character for "pear" (li), it has nothing to do with the fruit. The name actually comes from a local Tianjin dialect phrase, meaning "it's cooked!"– the vendor's cry to announce the cake is ready.
Its more formal name is "Zèng'er Gao", referring to the ancient Chinese steamer vessel (zèng) used to make it.
