According to a New York Times article by Jacob Dreyer (May 7), President Trump is visiting a China that has already moved on. Dreyer argues that Trump should temper his expectations, as China no longer sees a US presidential visit as global validation.
Having learned what it can from America, China is now charting its own course. Dreyer suggests that Trump himself accelerated this shift: the Chinese public has watched his failed trade wars and conflict with Iran, turning the US from a model to emulate into a problem to manage.
Interestingly, Dreyer notes that when it comes to industrial focus, such as visionary infrastructure investment and long-term national planning, the US now has much to learn from China.
Trump's willingness to improve bilateral relations has never been stronger.
