A powerful explosion struck a residential building in Queens, New York City in the early hours of April 30, injuring multiple police officers who were responding to an emergency call, according to CCTV News.
Several officers had arrived at the scene following a report of a man inside the home armed with a knife and a strong smell of gas.
As police attempted to enter the residence shortly before 3 a.m., a massive explosion occurred the moment the door was opened, sending officers flying due to the blast wave. Footage captured by police body cameras recorded the incident.
The New York City Police Department said eight officers were injured, suffering burns and head lacerations.
All individuals inside the home, including several young children, were located, and multiple people were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Police said the suspect was intoxicated at the time and had arrived carrying a knife and two garbage bags filled with cans containing "unknown substances." He allegedly forced his way into the residence of his wife, daughter, and two grandchildren.
The suspect remains at large.
The explosion caused the house to collapse and also damaged surrounding buildings.
