Authorities in Anhui province said on Wednesday (April 30) that the purchaser had deliberately added a liquid metallic substance found in a milk tea drink, after an investigation found no abnormalities in the shop's ingredients or preparation process.
A joint team of market regulators and police launched an investigation on Tuesday following online claims that a customer had found what appeared to be mercury in a drink purchased from a local outlet of Chagee.
Evidence has been secured for testing, and a suspect has been taken into custody as the investigation continues.
The case drew widespread attention after a woman claimed on social media that she had found a silver-colored liquid in her drink. The outlet said it was cooperating with authorities and awaiting the results of the investigation.
