US President Trump has once again been the target of a shooting incident. This marks the third time in two years that he has faced a death threat, following two previous assassination attempts. He is also one of the US presidents who has been attacked the most times in history, and the incident has once again raised concerns about political violence in the United States.
During his 2024 presidential campaign, Trump survived two assassination attempts. In July of that year, while delivering a speech in Butler, Pennsylvania, a 20-year-old gunman named Crooks ambushed him from the roof and fired several shots at Trump, grazing his ear. The shooter was ultimately shot and killed by the Secret Service, but the incident immediately sparked calls for reform within the Secret Service, and questions were raised about the agency's capabilities.
In September of that year, a 58-year-old man named Routh hid in the bushes at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach with a rifle, plotting an assassination attempt. He was later found guilty of Attempted Murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. In addition, Trump has faced other threats. The United States Attorney noted that Iranian agents had plotted to assassinate Trump in retaliation for his administration's killing of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander Qasem Soleimani. When asked why he has repeatedly been the target of violent attacks, Trump pointed out that it is related to the significant influence he wielded during his presidency.
Threats of political violence are not limited to the president. In 2017, Republican Congressman Scalise of Louisiana and others were caught in a mass shooting while playing baseball on the Capitol grounds; Scalise was seriously injured. Last year, the assassination of conservative activist Kirk while he was giving a speech sent shockwaves across the nation. Democrats have also faced threats: Minnesota Democratic State Representative Hortman and her husband Mark were murdered; Pennsylvania Governor Shapiro's residence was the target of an arson attack; Paul, the husband of former House Speaker Pelosi, was attacked with a hammer inside their home; and a shooting occurred at former Vice President Harris's campaign office in Arizona.
