Organised by the Hong Kong Theatres Association and funded by the Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency under the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau and the Film Development Fund, Hong Kong Cinema Day 2026 was held yesterday (April 25). The event drew an enthusiastic response, attracting over 201,000 admissions and breaking last year’s record of 195,000, making it a citywide cultural highlight.

All 52 commercial cinemas across Hong Kong offered a flat ticket price of HK$30 for the day, allowing the public to enjoy a wide variety of films at exceptional value and experience the unique magic of the big screen. Cinemas in every district were bustling with crowds. A total of 1,694 screenings were held throughout the day, with total attendance reaching 201,519 and an average occupancy rate exceeding 81 per cent – up about 4.1 percentage points from last year’s Cinema Day. Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, Ms Rosanna Law, also visited a cinema to show her support and watched a quality Hong Kong production together with moviegoers.

Beyond packed houses, the event successfully boosted footfall and business in surrounding shopping areas. Many shopping malls, major restaurant chains and retail outlets spontaneously rolled out promotions for ticket stubs, including free parking, extra loyalty points, buy-one-get-one-free dining deals, 15 per cent discounts, and the use of stubs as HK$5 vouchers.

Hong Kong Theatres Association Chairman Mr Yuen Yin-man said that apart from ticket discounts, the event helped bring the community together, allowing people of different ages to share joyful moments with family and friends. The association hopes to continue promoting Hong Kong Cinema Day as an annual cultural highlight, fostering interaction among families, communities and business districts through films and cinemas, and further spreading cinema culture.
