The TV drama "Pursuit of Jade" (Zhu Yu) has recently gained widespread popularity in Taiwan, with its lead actor Zhang Linghe attracting sustained attention on the island.

During a recent mainland visit, young members of a delegation told Cheng Li-wun, chairwoman of the Chinese Kuomintang party, "Why make cross-Strait relations so complicated? Just invite Zhang Linghe to Taiwan," a remark that sparked discussion.

According to a report by Yangshipin, a video platform under China Media Group on April 25, Zhang responded to the enthusiasm from Taiwan audiences, saying, "The appreciation from Taiwan compatriots is certainly not only due to our visual presentation or aesthetics, but because of the emotional depth that creates resonance."

He also shared insights into his role as Xie Zheng in "Pursuit of Jade". To portray the character, Zhang said he worked closely with the director to explore the character's backstory and personal development, emphasizing narrative logic and emotional buildup.

At a regular press conference held on April 22, a reporter asked about Cheng Li-wun's earlier remarks referencing young visitors' comments about Zhang, which had triggered heated discussion. The reporter also asked whether Zhang Linghe might visit Taiwan for exchanges.

Zhang Han, a spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, responded that TV dramas such as "Pursuit of Jade" have recently been popular on both sides of the Strait, and that the attention and appreciation for their actors among Taiwan audiences reflect growing interest.

She said the remarks by young members of the visiting delegation expressed a genuine expectation among Taiwan youth for expanded cross-Strait film and television exchanges and for peaceful development of cross-Strait relations. She added that such cases illustrate the unique role of cultural exchange in narrowing psychological distance between people on both sides.

Zhang emphasized that authorities consistently support "two-way exchanges" in the film and television sectors and welcome mainland artists visiting Taiwan to engage with local audiences.

She noted that people on both sides share common cultural roots and that cultural resonance serves as a natural bond connecting them. Efforts will continue to facilitate cross-Strait cultural cooperation, encouraging more frequent exchanges among artists and young people to enhance mutual understanding and strengthen emotional ties.
