A late-night AirAsia flight from Chongqing to Kuala Lumpur was delayed after a dispute erupted onboard involving a Chinese passenger, culminating in police being called and the passenger being removed from the aircraft.
According to witness accounts cited by local media, the incident began when a female passenger made a prolonged, loud phone call inside the cabin after a travel companion was reportedly unable to board. A Malaysian passenger seated nearby asked her to lower her voice, but the exchange escalated into a verbal confrontation.
The situation intensified when the Malaysian passenger began recording on a mobile phone. The woman demanded that the recording be deleted. When AirAsia cabin crew arrived to mediate, she reportedly objected to the crew communicating in English and insisted they speak Chinese, criticizing the airline staff for not using Mandarin on an international flight. In videos circulating online, the passenger is heard making repeated demands for an explanation and urging that the aircraft should not depart until her concerns are addressed.
After crew members were unable to de-escalate the conflict, AirAsia staff contacted police. Officers later boarded the plane and escorted the passenger off for further discussion.
The flight involved was AirAsia X flight D7809, scheduled to depart at 2:00 a.m. on April 22 and arrive in Kuala Lumpur at 6:45 a.m. local time. It ultimately took off at 3:46 a.m., a delay of 1 hour and 46 minutes, and landed at 8:14 a.m., arriving 1 hour and 29 minutes behind schedule.
The delay had costly ripple effects for travelers with onward connections. Some passengers missed their connecting flights and were later rebooked by the airline onto flights the next day, with temporary accommodation arranged in Kuala Lumpur. Others transiting through Kuala Lumpur to the Maldives reported more severe losses, as prepaid hotel bookings in the Maldives were rendered unusable, leading to significant out-of-pocket expenses.
