The Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens 2026 kicks off today (April 17) and runs through Sunday at the Kai Tak Stadium. This year marks the tournament's 50th anniversary, a momentous occasion. As the first of the three highest-tier stops in the HSBC SVNS World Rugby Sevens Series, the event features 12 of the world's top teams in both the men's and women's categories. Alongside the Hong Kong-exclusive Melrose Claymores competition (where the Hong Kong China men's and women's teams defend their titles), a total of over 70 thrilling matches will take place.
Even before the matches began, the atmosphere was electric. Fans of the World Rugby Sevens have a "tradition" of dressing up in flamboyant costumes and creative outfits, and this year that spirit has taken over Kai Tak as well. Many fans dressed as classic characters such as Super Mario Bros, while others came as fruits, food items, beverages, and more. Many fans were also seen wearing "I Love HK" T-shirts. The elaborately dressed fans even sang along in the stands, cheering on their teams and bringing the energy to a fever pitch.
